Artist Oscar Howe, a member of the Yanktonai tribe of South Dakota's Crow Creek Reservation, studied at the Santa Fe Indian School and became a leader in the field of American Indian painting, combining Santa Fe and traditional Dakota styles in his work. On the back cover, Howe's Sioux Seed Player (casein on paper, 14-1/4" x 20", courtesy University of South Dakota, Vermillion) shows a colorful rendition of a woman playing a dice game called Cunwiyawa in which carved plum pits serve as the dice.
