Cover Art Description:
Artist Oscar Howe, a member of the Yanktonai tribe of South Dakota's Crow Creek Reservation, studied at the Santa Fe Indian School and became a leader in the field of American Indian painting, combining Santa Fe and traditional Dakota styles in his work. Howe's Sioux Elk Game (Woskate Hehaka) (tempera on paper, 17-3/4" x 23-1/2", gift of Brooky Calhoun Zajac in memory of her father Herbert Calhoun, (copyright)Adelheid Howe, 1983) is reproduced on the front cover courtesy the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. On the back cover, Howe's Sioux Seed Player (casein on paper, 14-1/4" x 20", courtesy University of South Dakota, Vermillion) shows a colorful rendition of a woman playing a dice game called Cunwiyawa in which carved plum pits serve as the dice.
