front cover: Montana The Magazine of Western History, Summer 2007

Cover Art Description:

Even in the early 1900s, Yellowstone National Park occupied a special place in American imagination. Americans learned about the "park experience" from the hundreds of published accounts that appeared each year as well as from the millions of "penny postcards" visitors sent home to friends and family. Several of the articles in this issue capture the excitement a trip to Yellowstone and the surrounding area could inspire. The front cover image, Alpine Garden, by Conrad Schwiering (undated, oil on canvas board, 26" x 22", Haynes Foundation Collection, gift of Mrs. Isabel Haynes, MHS Museum, Helena, 1987.45.03 Copyright Estate of Conrad Schwiering) shows a sparkling Tetons summer scene.
