Montana Place Names from Alzada to Zortman is the authoritative reference
guide to Montana places.
The project began at the Montana Historical Society Research Center when,
stumped over a question about the origin of the name of a mountain peak,
Brian Shovers and Charlene Porsild wished for a comprehensive reference on
Montana's place names. A patron casually pointed out that the staff of the
Research Center would make the perfect team to research and write such a
book. Brian and Charlene agreed, and the project soon grew to include
historian Ellen Baumler, author of Spirit Tailings and Beyond Spirit
Tailings, as well as historian Rich Aarstad and archivist Ellie Arguimbau.
They turned to Montanans across the state, calling museums, coffee shops,
libraries, and schools to unearth the stories of places across Montana.
Montana Place Names includes historic photos and full-color maps that make
each place easy to find. It is meant to be dog-eared, marked up, and
flipped through. Take it along on road trips, put it in the glove box, or
keep it handy for after-dinner discussions and friendly debates. No matter
how you use it, Montana Place Names is sure to spark conversation and
satisfy curiosity about Montana's rich history.
