Fees

The staff at the Montana Historical Society Research Center will research your request for a small fee. Fees are charged for the staff time involved in doing the research whether or not an answer is found. Patrons will receive a written summary of research performed.

Montana Historical Society Members receive two (2) complimentary research requests annually with up to 10 copies per request. You can use this benefit to request general, genealogy, photograph or business entities research.

General Research Requests

MHS Members: Two (2) complimentary research requests annually * Montana Residents: $10 for the first hour of research
  • includes up to 10 copies (excludes fees for audio recordings which are invoiced separately)
  • $25 per hour plus copies after that
Non-Montana Residents: $25 for the first hour of research
  • includes up to 10 copies (excludes fees for audio recordings which are invoiced separately)
  • $25 per hour plus copies after that
* This member benefit may be used to request general, genealogy, or photograph research. Limit: 2 complimentary requests of any kind per year.

Genealogy Research Requests

MHS Members: Two (2) complimentary research requests annually *

Montana Residents: $10 per search (excludes fees for audio recordings which are invoiced separately)

Non-Montana Residents: $25 per search (excludes fees for audio recordings which are invoiced separately)

* This member benefit may be used to request general, genealogy, or photograph research. Limit: 2 complimentary requests of any kind per year.

Photograph Research Requests

MHS Members: Two (2) complimentary research requests annually *

Montana Residents: $10 for the first hour of research

  • includes up to 10 copies
  • $25 per hour plus copies after that

Non-Montana Residents: $25 for the first hour of research

  • $25 per hour plus copies after that

Legislative Research Requests

Research on one bill equals one request.

How do I pay the fee?

When you submit a research request online, you can pay with a credit card using our secure gateway. If you prefer to mail your request, please enclose a check made payable to "Montana Historical Society Research Center." Our mailing address is here.
